When Life Is Too Much But Still Not Enough

My five-year-old daughter is literally buzzing with life, not unlike a self-contained beehive just filled with activity and excitement.

A soft, new blanket for her bed is enough to make her squeal and dance with delight. She is both wonderful and full of wonder at the same time.

Quantity versus Quality

On occasion, I’ve seen her hold up a little coin purse stuffed with change that I’ve given her to buy small things when we shop. She shows me her tiny collection of coins and tells me how rich she is, smiling wildly.

When I give her twenty pennies, she’s much more excited than if I give her one quarter. Try as I might to explain the meaning of value, she still believes that MORE is BETTER.

She gives me a quizzical look when I try to help her understand that a one dollar bill is the same as one hundred pennies. I suppose that, as she grows up, she’ll eventually “get it”.

And I hope the same is true for humanity.

I dream of the time with we collectively end our search for fulfillment through consumption while turning a blind eye to our one and only Earth. And I sincerely hope we can all learn to slow down long enough to behold the magnificent yet temporary beauty of people, places, animals and nature; honoring those among us who are mending up their wounded hearts and acting from courageous determination to make themselves anew and make a difference too.

I dream of the children into whose hands we are placing absolutely EVERYTHING; that they might put down their gadgets and engage the vision of their hearts. That they will not just look but deeply see the unspeakably precious gifts of being alive and capable of changing destiny.

In the words of William Henry Channing:

“To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich. To listen to stars and birds, babes and sages with open heart; to study hard, to think quietly, act frankly, talk gently, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious grow up through the common… this is my symphony.”
