Our featured guest today is Doctor Karen Osburn.
Karen is the host of the top-ranked podcast called Mom at 41 which is all about embracing imperfect mothers everywhere.
She leads an online community as a place to feel loved, guided, and inspired to be honest and transparent about the very real challenges of motherhood.
Once their business and careers were firmly established, Karen and her husband turned their focus to starting a family. After years of being unable to conceive, they finally just stopped talking about their shared desire for children and lived with their pain in silence.
After more years passed, the couple sought medical help for infertility but after too much stress and too many painful treatments, Karen simply could not endure the process any longer and she gave up on dream of ever getting pregnant.
Once Karen and her husband decided they would no longer struggle to “make it happen”, a new way to become parents became possible. Karen began to investigate the process of adoption which was involved and lengthy but “worth it”. Two full years after beginning the adoption process, Karen and her husband received the phone call they’d been waiting for; a birth mother had chosen them to finally become parents… seven long years after their journey began.
The Action Steps
Karen found some key steps that helped her along the way :
- Stop Pushing: ultimately let go of that which you are struggling against or the way in which you’re trying to affect a certain outcome. Letting go will reduce your stress and allow you to eventually see alternatives that never occurred to you before.
- Define Your Core Values: make decisions based on your values so that, no matter what, your life will ultimately reflect what’s matters most to you and your family. Be 100% committed to the decision, once you’ve made it.
- Be Imperfect & Imbalanced: it’s important to realize that the notion of having a life in complete “balance” is an illusion. Just accept that no one has it all together even if it appears that way from the outside. Embrace life’s seasons and how different aspects of your life will be stronger or weaker depending on which temporary phase you find yourself in.
